Progress NC Statement on Gov. McCrory’s Signing of the Voter Restrictions Bill
RALEIGH—Progress NC today released the following statement:
“The last time Gov. McCrory faced questions about the voting restrictions bill, he admitted that he hadn’t even read the bill. Today, I’m still not sure he’s read it. The Governor’s YouTube video was exclusively about Voter ID and mentioned nothing of the dozens of other provisions in the bill.
Gov. McCrory chose to hide behind his video, rather than face tough questions about North Carolina’s election laws, because he can’t defend the bill.
Let’s not bury the lede. Voter ID will affect 200,000-300,000 voters, but shortening early voting and ending same-day registration will affect millions of voters. In 2012, more than 2.5 million North Carolinians voted early. Now everyone will face longer lines and more hassles at the polls, thanks to Gov. McCrory.
Gov. McCrory pretends to be worried about the integrity of the election process, but nothing will damage the integrity of elections in North Carolina more than this bill. By making it harder for voters to vote, Gov. McCrory is putting the integrity of all future North Carolina elections in jeopardy.”
