Progress NC Statement on NCGA Plan to Cut UNC Campuses

RALEIGH—Progress North Carolina today released the following statement regarding recent comments that the NC General Assembly is considering closing UNC System campuses.

“The most pressing problem facing North Carolina today is our high unemployment rate and jobs should be our number one priority. That’s why talk of closing UNC campuses is so shocking. There is no better way to destroy a local economy than to close a college campus.

Thousands of jobs are lost, small businesses will be forced to shutter, the local real estate market would be devastated, all while the community would lose its number one attraction for new business and investment.

Gov. McCrory and state lawmakers have already spent way too much time focusing on opossums, nipples, closet fires and DMV lines, while ignoring crippling unemployment. Serious consideration of closing UNC campuses will only make the problem worse.”
